What makes Brazil different
Brazil shares its 50 × 70 mm format with Canada and very little else, so a photo left over from another application is almost never the right size. Unlike Canada, though, there is no requirement for anything on the back of the print.
What catches people out
- Brazil shares the 50 × 70 mm format with Canada and almost nobody else.
- Photos must be recent, generally within the last six months.
- Head coverings and accessories that obscure the face are refused.
Glasses, which are not accepted at all, and photographs older than six months.
Where the photo goes
Photos are submitted with the Polícia Federal application, and for most applicants the photograph is taken at the appointment itself. Prints are chiefly for consular procedures abroad.
Printing 4 for the price of one
At 50 × 70 mm (5 × 7 cm), 4 photos fit on a single 4 × 6 inch print — the cheapest product at any kiosk or online print service, against a booth that charges for a set of four.
Print at actual size and turn off "fit to page", "scale to fit" and borderless printing. Each of those resizes the image by a few percent, which is enough to push the head outside the 31–36 mm chin to crown that Polícia Federal requires.
