What makes Japan different
Japan applies the common 35 × 45 mm size but is unusually strict about the background being genuinely featureless. A wall with a faint texture, a visible join or an uneven paint finish is refused where other countries would let it pass.
What catches people out
- Photos must be taken within six months of applying.
- The face must be centred with a small, consistent margin above the head.
- Japan is strict about a completely uncluttered background — even a faint wall texture can be refused.

Where the photo goes
Printed photos are submitted at a prefectural passport office or, for residents abroad, at the embassy or consulate. Photo booths across Japan produce compliant prints directly.
Printing 6 for the price of one
At 35 × 45 mm, 6 photos fit on a single 4 × 6 inch print — the cheapest product at any kiosk or online print service, against a booth that charges for a set of four.
Print at actual size and turn off "fit to page", "scale to fit" and borderless printing. Each of those resizes the image by a few percent, which is enough to push the head outside the 32–36 mm chin to crown that Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan requires.
