What makes Ireland different
Ireland's rules track the UK's closely — the same 35 × 45 mm frame, the same 29 to 34 mm head height, the same preference for light grey over pure white. The paperwork differs: a paper application needs four identical prints, twice what the UK asks for.
What catches people out
- Passport Online accepts a digital photo taken by a participating photographer, who gives you a code rather than prints.
- For paper applications you still submit four identical printed photos.
- Like the UK, Ireland prefers a light grey background over pure white.

Print at actual size and turn off "fit to page", "scale to fit" and borderless printing. Each of those resizes the image by a few percent, which is enough to push the head outside the 29–34 mm chin to crown that Passport Service, Department of Foreign Affairs requires.
