What makes Canada different
Canada is the only major country whose photo carries information on the back. The photographer's studio name, address and the date must be stamped or handwritten there — a printed sticker is refused. That single rule means a photo you produced entirely at home needs a studio to endorse it, or you use a commercial photographer.
What catches people out

- You submit two identical photos, and one is signed by your guarantor on the back.
- The 50 × 70 mm format is used by almost nobody else, so a photo made for any other country will not pass.
The 50 × 70 mm size is the usual problem: it is shared with almost nobody, so applicants arrive with a 35 × 45 mm photo left over from a visa application and have to start again.
Where the photo goes
Two identical photos go with the paper application, one of them signed on the back by your guarantor. There is no fully online photo submission for a Canadian passport.
Printing 4 for the price of one
At 50 × 70 mm, 4 photos fit on a single 4 × 6 inch print — the cheapest product at any kiosk or online print service, against a booth that charges for a set of four.
Print at actual size and turn off "fit to page", "scale to fit" and borderless printing. Each of those resizes the image by a few percent, which is enough to push the head outside the 31–36 mm chin to crown that IRCC / Passport Canada requires.
